Glucosamine and shellfish allergy: check the source first

Glucosamine is often produced from crustacean chitin, although fermented sources also exist. The actual product label is decisive.

The essentials

01

Do not assume safety from the product category if you have a known allergy.

02

Check the manufacturer’s source and allergen declaration.

03

If the label is unclear, seek professional advice before use.

01

Why origin matters with glucosamine

Most glucosamine used in supplements is obtained from chitin, the shell material of crustaceans. For anyone with a shellfish allergy that is the decisive piece of information on the label.

Crustacean allergy is triggered by specific proteins, principally tropomyosin. Processing into glucosamine removes protein extensively but not completely in every method. Residual amounts are possible, and individual thresholds vary widely.

02

What that means if you are affected

If you have a diagnosed crustacean allergy, products with crustacean-derived glucosamine are not suitable unless a doctor has advised otherwise. Reactions in this allergy can be severe, so self-experimentation is not appropriate.

Fermented glucosamine from plant material is the alternative. Labels then usually say "from fermentation", "vegan" or "of plant origin". If no origin is stated at all, assume the animal source.

03

Reading the labelling correctly

In the EU crustaceans must be declared as an allergen, normally emphasised in the ingredient list plus a note such as "contains crustaceans". Also look for traces statements indicating possible cross-contamination in production.

Check the capsule shell separately. Gelatine is usually bovine or porcine and is not a shellfish allergen, but it is relevant for vegetarian and vegan diets. The two questions are often confused.

04

If you are unsure

With a known allergy, clear new products with the practice that diagnosed it. Take the full ingredient list; the product name alone is not enough to judge.

For acute reactions such as breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat or circulatory problems, call emergency services immediately. This page is guidance on labelling, not allergy advice.
