Flexaten safety: what to check before use
A useful safety page states limits. Flexaten is a food supplement, not a medicine and not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment.
The essentials
Seek medical advice first if you take medicines, have a chronic condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding.
If you have allergies, check the source of glucosamine and gelatine.
Store dry, out of reach of young children and according to the package directions.
01
Who the product is not intended for
As is standard for supplements, pregnant and breastfeeding women and children are excluded. The reason is missing data for those groups rather than a known risk. The product is also unsuitable for anyone with a known allergy to one of its components.
If you have a chronic condition or take medicines regularly, clear the product with a doctor or pharmacist first. That applies particularly to anticoagulants and to diabetes, both of which have been discussed in connection with glucosamine.
02
The components and their safety aspects
Glucosamine sulphate: check origin because of possible shellfish allergy; possible interaction with coumarin anticoagulants. MSM: well tolerated at usual amounts, occasional digestive complaints at the start. Horsetail extract: plant extract standardised to 7% silicon.
Vitamin C at 50 mg per capsule equals 50% of the nutrient reference value. Vitamin C carries the authorised claim that it contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of cartilage. That is a statement about vitamin C, not about the finished product.
03
Do not exceed the daily serving
Two capsules daily is the amount stated by the manufacturer. Taking more brings no documented additional benefit and raises the chance of unwanted effects. That holds even when other supplements are taken alongside.
With several products, check the total of each individual nutrient. Someone also taking a multivitamin easily exceeds the reference value for vitamin C, which is uncritical for that vitamin but not for others.
04
Storage, labelling and when to seek medical advice
Store cool, dry and out of reach of small children. With every new pack check batch number, best-before date and the ingredient list, since formulations can change.
Regardless of any product, these signs belong in a medical consultation: sudden severe joint pain, swelling with redness and heat, a locked joint, fever together with joint symptoms, and symptoms following a fall or accident.
