MSM: a clear look at methylsulfonylmethane
MSM is commonly described as a source of organically bound sulphur. That description does not by itself prove an effect of a finished product.
The essentials
The label should spell out methylsulfonylmethane or clearly explain the abbreviation MSM.
Product-specific directions take precedence over generic dosage tables online.
For a sensitive stomach, individual tolerance matters more than universal claims about a perfect time of day.
01
What methylsulfonylmethane is
MSM is an organosulphur compound that occurs naturally in small amounts in foods including cow milk, coffee and some vegetables. For supplements it is produced synthetically; the molecule is identical to the naturally occurring one.
It is an odourless, water-soluble solid. Capsules typically contain between 100 and 1000 mg per daily serving. Flexaten declares 200 mg per capsule, so 400 mg for the recommended two-capsule serving.
02
The sulphur argument and where it stops
The usual justification runs: sulphur is part of the amino acids methionine and cysteine, and those occur in connective tissue. The first half of that sentence is correct. The conclusion does not follow.
A nutrient does not act simply because it appears somewhere in the body chemically. What would matter is a deficiency corrected by intake, and sulphur deficiency is not described on a normal protein-containing diet. Accordingly there is no authorised EU health claim for MSM.
03
Tolerability and how to take it
MSM is considered well tolerated at commercial amounts. Mild digestive discomfort, bloating or headache are occasionally reported, mainly at the start and at higher doses. If you are sensitive, take the capsules with a meal and plenty of fluid.
There are insufficient data for pregnancy, breastfeeding and children, so manufacturers exclude these groups. If you take medicines regularly, discuss the addition with a doctor or pharmacist.
04
How to compare MSM products
Comparison is relatively simple here because there is only one form: the amount per daily serving is the relevant figure. Check additionally whether the manufacturer states purity and whether a certificate of analysis is available for the batch.
Compare prices per gram of MSM per day rather than per pack. Powder is almost always cheaper on paper; capsules are more precisely dosed and taste-neutral.
