Comparison
Infographic: glucosamine sulphate and HCl at a glance
A compact comparison of salt form, label logic, origin and research context — without inventing a universal winner.
The essentials
Sulphate and hydrochloride are different salts of the same amino sugar.
Compound weight is not the same as free glucosamine weight.
Consider allergen information and daily serving alongside the form.
01
The comparison at a glance
Glucosamine sulphate: contains sulphate plus a stabilising salt, lower share of pure glucosamine per gram of raw material, broader study base, common in European products. Glucosamine hydrochloride: no added salt, higher share of pure glucosamine per gram, narrower study base.
Both contain the same glucosamine molecule. The difference lies in the composition of the raw material, not in the active substance itself.
02
Why the number on the front can mislead
If two packs both say "1000 mg", one may contain more pure glucosamine than the other. Without the form, comparing those two numbers is meaningless.
The only reliable statement is wording such as "glucosamine sulphate 2KCl, equivalent to x mg glucosamine". Not every manufacturer provides that additional figure.
03
Which form for which purpose
If you want to align with published literature, sulphate is the form with more publications behind it. If you are after the maximum amount of pure glucosamine per capsule, hydrochloride has the arithmetic advantage.
There is no reliable tolerability difference between the forms. Origin matters more in both cases, because it decides suitability for shellfish allergy and for a vegan diet.
04
The graphic in text form
Question one: is a form stated on the label? If not, no assessment is possible. Question two: is a conversion to pure glucosamine given? If yes, use that figure for comparison. Question three: is origin stated? If not, assume crustaceans.
Those three questions answer more than any claim on the front of the pack.
